To Cineast, who posted the picture of Plaza Theaters — Muchas Gracias! It’s interesting to note — the corner closest to the camera has “Restaurant Cervantes.” By the cars I date this very early 70’s. By the time I was a movie goer there, in the late 70s, that restaurant was “Restaurant Sancho Panza.” And in the 1979-1980 expansion, that restaurant gave way to a Burger King and other fast-food joints.

But for all those years, the marquee and facade never changed, and I still remember the glow of that signage.

Thank you for the memories… seeing this picture stopped my heart cold, it was almost like seeing a picture of a love long lost..

This re-opens as a 350-seat single-screen indie house tonight. Opening fare is the same they opened with back in the 40’s — Blue Skies. If the photo in the article below is to be believed, the interior is Streamline Moderne. I don’t know if it’s original to the place, but at least it looks like it could be from that era.

I wasn’t impressed with the Gateway. Went to see Religulous. I was looking for a well-preserved example of a proper old-style theater, what I found was they took the big auditorium and split it into 2 or 3.. and very very badly. The seating is still curved. You can tell this was a 1000+ seat house. But now, the curved seating remains, but the screens are “flat” instead of the curved one the original must’ve had to conform to that seating curve. So what happens? On the left most auditorium, the seats don’t line up with the screen. You sit at an angle to it. I can only surmise the right-most auditorium is the same.

I won’t be back. The worse “plexing” job I’ve seen ever.

Is there no single-screen 700+ seat house left in this state?! One that hasn’t been hacked up to ‘keep up’ with the megaplexes (who are now themselves dying off?)

The last movie I saw there was Who Framed Roger Rabbit.. at that point in my life I was really, really down and hopeless, and WHAM! That cartoon made me smile and laugh! I didn’t realize Cinema 4 was so big! 1117 seats is huge!

I just watched Brave here last 28 July 12, auditorium 4. This place is a grindhouse. The entire platter, that is the trailers, the short “La Luna” and the entire feature had a pair of perfectly straight scratches running down the right 3rd of the image. The aperture is FILTHY — the image is bordered by fringed fingers of dust at the sides, and mounds of it top and bottom. The audio was mainly loud to the point of pain, save for a reel and a half that was so quiet you could hear the projector’s chatter, and everyone’s conversations. This place is a disgrace. Normally I regret when a good moviehouse closes, but this one isn’t good. It’s a grindhouse showing 1st-run films.

Saw Brave here twice in auditorium 5, once on opening weekend, the 2nd time the following tuesday. Compared to the Coral Square 8 this one was a good experience.. but it isn’t all that. I guess Frank’s theater chain specializes in Mediocre. I’m done with them. Between the Coral Square 8 and this one, I don’t ever want to set foot in another Frank’s.
