The well-loved British film star Jessie Matthews appeared here in the Alan Melville play “Castle in the Air” in the early 1950s.

This was a great place, under the same management as the Embassy, Esher further along the Portsmouth Road. Remember sitting through Summer Holiday two and a half times in one go. I used to be given the old hanging cards advertising the week’s attractions when I was taken for a haircut every Saturday, and I’m pretty sure it closed earlier than you suggest. I think the last film shown was The Hill starring Sean Connery and Harry Andrews, which was released in 1965.
Oh it really was rather wonderful. I remember the staircases and foyer adorned with gorgeous framed tinted pictures of Troy Donahue, Annette Funicello and our very own Hayley Mills. And there was a Boots lending library right opposite which survived long into the era of the free public ones.
