Colfax Theater South Bend, Indiana
At the premier of Knute Rockne.
The Colfax Theater, located at the corner of Main and Colfax in downtown South Bend, IN, opened on August 4, 1928 with much fanfare. It was hailed as the first theater “in the United States, and thereby in the world, to offer a program consisting of sound pictures, Vitaphone and Movietone, from start to finish” by local newspapers The physical appearance of the theater declined over the years, despite a two hundred thousand dollar renovation in 1957. It closed “temporarily” in 1977, but could not reopen despite fundraising efforts. It eventually was demolished in the early 1990s because its owners could no longer purchase insurance
