As for Ponce, I am not sure the Drive-in there was named “Santa Maria Drive-in” as you have it. I always knew it as the “Ponce Drive-in”. There was a separate theater in Ponce by the name of “Teatro Santa Maria”, but it was not a drive-in. The Ponce Drive-in was located on the SE corner of the intersection of PR-2 (aka, Ponce By-pass) and PR-585 (the road that leads from Los Pampanos to La Playa). There is a Sam’s Club there today (2018). The Santa Maria theater, on the other hand, was located on Calle Ferrocarril, across from the Santa Maria Shopping Center. So, again, I doubt the drive-in in Ponce was called Santa Maria for the simple reason it would be easily confused with the Teatro Santa Maria, a no-no in business.

This theater was found at the southwest corner of Calle Leon and Calle Sol in Ponce, Puerto Rico, in the downtown historic zone, just one block from Plaza Las Delicias. It was closed sometime in the 1970s or 1980s, and the inside was subsequently converted into apartments. However, because the building was located in a zone designated as historic, all of the external Art Deco arquitecture of the building had to be preserved during the conversion and thus it still looks looks much the was it did during its 1940-1970s heydays.

NOTE: I can’t find how to add missing theaters to this site. Could someone please add the following Ponce theaters which are missing from this site (I have addresses and photos for all of them, which I can add later once they are listed in this site):

(1)Hollywood – 1 screen – closed (2)National -1 screen – closed (3)Argel – 1 screen – closed (4)Belgica – 1 screen – closed (5)Rex – 1 screen – closed (6)Universal – 1 screen – closed (7)Miramar – 1 screen – closed (8)Santa Maria – 1 screen – closed

(9)Broadway – 1 screen – demolished

(10)Caribbean Cinemas – 11 screens – open

The first 7 are all historic due to their architectural style, etc., and thus under preservation.

I hope to get to adding the missing Ponce theaters this weekend. BTW, there was also Teatro Miramar in barrio Playa. That one was located on Calle Arias corner of Calle Alfonso XII. Also, Teatro Rex (which I mentioned before) was located on Calle Mayor Cantera ACROSS from Calle del Agua (also known as Calle Acueducto). To be specific, the theater is located on the east side of Calle Mayor Cantera. Earlier I said it was located on Calle Mayor Cantera corner of Calle del Agua, but since Calle del Agua ends at Mayor Cantera (forming a “T” so to speak), just wanted to clarify that the Rex was not located at neither the NW nor the SW corners, but ACROSS from where Calle del Agua ends, that is, the theater would be in front of you as you approach Calle Mayor Cantera driving eastbound from Calle del Agua. Hope this hleps!

Almost forgot: Adding to the list of vintage teathers in Ponce, Number 9 would be Teatro Rivoli, which was located on the SW corner of the intersection of Calle Leon and Calle Sol.

This teather was located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Calle Leon and Calle Sol in the Ponce Historic Zone. I believe it was recently converted into an aprtment building. Hope this helps.

For a list of all of Ponce Theaters, with names and locations, of the bygone eras of the 1930s-1970s, see my posting under Teatro Victoria, Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Davsot is correct, the theater in question (Teatro Victoria) is at the Corner of Calle Unión and Calle Victoria. It is on the northeast corner of the intersection, and its entrance faces Calle Unión thus the Calle Unión and Calle Victoria description. I believe I have a photo of the theater (half-fallen marquee and all) that I could share with this site if anyone is interested.

BTW, someone posted a question about Teatro Victoria in the Teatro Fox Delicias page of this site, referent to a theater on Calle Comercio, also in Ponce. The theater in Calle Comercio was called “Teatro Nacional”. For the sake of rounding up a complete list of all the theaters in Ponce of those bygone 1930s to 1970s years, there were the following other theaters in Ponce before the move to sites near malls: (1) Teatro Fox Delicias, was, of course, on Calle Plaza Munoz Rivera, between Calles Union and Atocha, and I have already mentioned (2)Teatro Victoria, at NE corner of Victoria and Union streets, and (3) Teatro National which was located on Calle Comercio, between Calle Cruz and Belgica’s Calle 3, then there were (4)Teatro Hollywood, on Calle Villa SW corner of Calle Esperanza, (5)Teatro Argel, on Calle Victoria between Calle Distrito and (almost SW corner of) Calle Fogos (6)Teatro Belgica, on Calle Colombia esq. Calle Gran Via, (7)Teatro Rex, on Calle Mayor Cantera esq. Calle del Agua, and (8) Teatro Miramar, at Playa de Ponce on Calle Arias NE corner of Calle Alfonso XII. I cannot confirmed this officially yet, but the historic, and sadly extinct, Teatro Hollywood, was located I believe (unconfirmed) on the NE corner of Calle Mayor Cantera and Calle Isabel. Regards.
