The theatre was known back in the mid and late 70s as the place where “exclusive engagements” were held. The CBS affiliate in town KENS ran frequent promotion of releases at “the NEW Laurel Theatre.”
In reality, this theater was closed sometime around 1977. As a boy, I used to live on Silvertip Dr. in San Antonio and would see the screen at night and occasionaly look at the screen with bionoculars. Even then, the picture was small and I quit doing that. Anyway, the place was torn down in ‘77 and a Fed-Mart was constucted in its place. Target took over the place in the mid 80s and that outlet closed its doors when a new SuperTarget was built a few miles away in 2002. The place, as of this writing, remains vacant
As of September 2005, the 49er marquee is still there, but has now deteriorated further than what is seen in the link above.
