Response to Ed Blank: Of course, there were two main routes from downtown Augusta to Ft Gordon – and there were drive-ins along each route. Anyway, here is a list of all the drive-ins I can remember:
The SkyView (in the Albion Acres area off Milledgeville Rd)
The No. 1 Drive-In (at the fork of Milledgeville Rd and Hwy 1)
The Forest Hills (Wrightsboro Rd)
The Weiss (Hwy 25)
The Hilltop (on Schultz Hill just across the river in SC)
and the Marrh was the indoor theater in N. Augusta, SC
I worked at the Miller as an usher in 1956-57. Many memories of a great and beautiful theater. It really needs to be preserved. If interested, go to www.friendsofthemiller.org
Also in response to Ed Blank: If you don’t consider North Augusta a “city of some size,” then, yes, Aiken is the closest city to Augusta that’s in SC.
