Sometimes Art Deco was a bit …out there ! A couple of leaping nude spirits was a feature of the very swirly decor of the Newsreel Theatre in the basement of the 1940 Century Building.
The theatre design is credited to both Marcus Barlow and cinema specialists Taylor & Soilleux (who also did the Rivoli, so I’d say it was them). Looks like only something of the ceiling survives in the current nightclub.
It sat 500, the largest Newsreel Cinema in the CBD, of which there were 4 or 5 in 1940.
The building stayed a cinema till 1985. The photos are from a FB group Melbourne Theatres, but they often don’t say where from- presumably a theatre magazine. Obviously inspired by the Odeon Leicester Square in London, UK, completed 1937 – Notes Storey of Melbourne.
