CREMORNE / ALBANY PICTURE GARDENS (1896-1910) Stirling Terrace - 1896.

Built by Edward Reynolds in 1896 , the Cremorne / Albany Picture Gardens was situated behind the Royal George Hotel in upper Stirling Terrace and opened by minstrel comedian and lessee W.B. “Billy” Warner on November 28.

Initially conceived as a summer-only venue, it was given a roof the following year which allowed allow the season to extend beyond December and February.

Entering under the archway from Stirling-terrace, visitors pass up a gravelled walk festooned with Chinese lanterns, illuminated with numerous gas-jets, and bordered with flower beds.

Passing the entrance door, the full effect of the improvements is at once seen. In the background is a convenient stage, with scenery, wings, festoons of drapery, and flags.

In January 1906 the Gardens were re-opened after a long break, and up until 1910 was used by travelling film exhibitors as well as theatrical companies. It was disused as a venue after being damaged by fire.
