Roebourne Open Air Pictures 51 Scholl Street, Roebourne, WA - 1936

The Roebourne Picture Gardens, established in 1936 by Charles Bayman, was a central social hub in the Pilbara region of Western Australia for several decades.

Originally located on the site now occupied by the ANZ Bank on Wedge Street, it provided open-air entertainment for the local community.

Timeline and Early Operation - Establishment (1936): Built by Charles Bayman, the gardens featured a timber and flat-iron screen. In its early days, Bayman offered free entry to children while adults were charged three shillings.

Wartime Transition (1942–1946): During World War II, the Australian Army took over the venue’s operation. Because the perimeter fence was not maintained during this time, movies were projected onto a painted wall of the adjacent courthouse, with expenses covered by silver coin donations.

Post-War Management: After the war, Fred Hull managed the site for Bayman starting around 1946. It became known for hosting annual Christmas parties for local children, a tradition that lasted many years.

Expansion and Closure - Iron Ore Boom (1960s): The business was sold to Jack and Joyce Glass in the early 1960s. As the population swelled during the region’s mining boom, the 350-capacity venue became too small for the demand. Screenings increased from twice-weekly to nightly, with three different movie changes per week.

Decline: Like many regional open-air cinemas, the gardens eventually closed due to the rise of home video and changing social habits. Historical projectors believed to have been used at the Roebourne and Dampier picture gardens are now preserved by the City of Karratha.

The site remains a point of interest on the Roebourne Heritage Trail, which documents the history of the town’s early settlers and Aboriginal heritage.
