The Cinerama site said 8k. I know their FB page said 2K and I pointed out the difference. Oh well. It doesn’t matter now. It’s a done deal. Hope it works out better for the 75th.
I think the problem is with the inexperienced projectionists. 70mm has its own set of issues from 35mm (magnetic sound and such). Oh well…it looked great!
Let me give my thoughts about today’s presentation of West Side Story. First off, it played on the big screen. :)
It looked great through the whole thing. The audio was totally a different story. Completely off during the sequence where Tony and Maria see each other for the first time at the school dance (and their ballet together). Same for the entire rumble sequence. Both are key scenes in the movie. Along with another 10 or 12 short outages throughout (15-60 seconds each). I will say a few people got up and left, and I’m sure they asked for refunds. To the Cinerama’s credit, they met everyone when they left the auditorium and gave EVERYONE a free pass for a future visit, along with an apology for the audio problem. I was impressed. Class act, Greg Wood!
Yay! 35mm for sure? And 16mm? Wow…truly retro along with Cineranma. I guess we are the luckiest movie-goers in the world. Props to Paul Allen for keeping it going. :)
Awesome! It would be a shame if they lost those capabilities. Thanks for the update. Did they say anything about 35mm? So far, it sounds like it’s all digital after the upgrade.
Interesting. I only saw that problem with Indy. I’ve seen a number of films there and that’s the only time it happened for me. I thought maybe it may be the unfamiliarity presenting 70mm, but I could be wrong.
Saw Indy today. The print was in pretty good shape. There was a problem when they started it up. Lights went down, curtain parted, and…nothing. About 30 seconds later, the sound started to spin up. When the audio was coming up, there was no picture. No Paramount logo or anything else. Then the picture came on and it was just in time for the title. Then it all went blank and silent again. Another 10 seconds and then audio spun up, everything came back up like it should. After that, no problems whatsoever. I know projecting 70MM is different than 35MM, but what is the difference that would cause this kind of problem? A similar audio problem happened when Lawrence was here in Feb. 08.
I took a friend who had never seen Lawrence before this afternoon. We were both impressed. This is the place where I saw it for the first time. There were only 2 problems. One was a known problem and it had been posted in the lobby, so there wer no surprises. There was going to be a 1.5 minute silence just before the intermission. It was a problem with the print. The other problem was a lot of frame jumping during the tent scene. Not sure if that was a problem beforehand or not, but it was sorted out in short order. Well done! Can’t beat 7th row center!

When it started again, it started where it stopped. The intermission portion never played. When it did finally come back up, there were no problems afterwards. I hope this doesn’t happen on Tuesday night for the last showing. The audience was appreciative, though.
