To make ends meet as a cub reporter, I worked as an usher at the York in the early 1980s, wearing the traditional black suit, white shirt and bow tie and equipped with a flashlight used mainly to usher late-arriving guests to their seats in the darkened theater. Sometimes we were tasked with getting the huge bags of pre-popped popcorn from storage. But most of the time I just watched the movie and thus was privileged to see the guy’s head explode in “Scanners” (1981) about 100 times.
