I have also created a tv station on Justin.tv. The program will change every Wednesday. It’s just like going to the children’s Saturday morning shows in the 40’s and 50’s. We have a snack b ar commercial, 3 cartoons, serials, newsreel, and a double feature. This weeks show until Wed. is 3 cartooons (Casper, Bugs Bunny & Popeye) 2 serials (Flash Gordon & Tarzan) a Lone Ranger preview and the movies are “Destination Moon” and “Hercules”.
The website is: http://www.justin.tv/gy2020
Enjoy and come back every week.

I am correcting myself a second time. It must be age. The Laurel was razed in Sept. 1986 rather than 1987.

On a previous post I gave the website of the Laurel Theatre and I entered it without cap letters. To go to the site, go to: http://www.satheatres.com/Laurel_Theatre.php

There are some comments about a fish tank. According to John Igo, the Uptown had a foutain in the lobby. The reason it was in the center of the lobby was due to an incident in the 1930’s. The union was at war with the owners, Community Theatres and set off a bomb in the lobby. With creative thinking, the owners took the hole in the floor which was close to some drain pipes and created a fountain in the center.

The Laurel Theatre was built by Interstate Theatre Circuit and was designed by John Eberson. It opened in January 1945. The owner was Joseph J. Barshop. It continued to be an Interstate Theatre showing second run movies until it was sold to Maurice Braha in 1978, who renamed it the New Laurel Theatre. Braha closed the theatre in 1982 and razed it in 1987. The theatre had a balcony and the total seating was 918. For more information go to http://www.satheatres.com/laurel_theatre.php

Eberson also designed the Woodlawn Theatre in San Antonio which opened August 17, 1945. Both theatres were similar in design.

I lived in Houston from 1968 to 1976 and I did attend a couple of movies at the Majestic. I too am sorry to see it gone. I returned to San Antonio in Jan. 1976 and within two years I began to study and research the theatres of San Antonio. I have been doing so ever since. I just completed a website for San Antonio theatres with 192 theatres in the site on 132 pages. It is located at http://www.satheatres.com/

Yesterday I posted on the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio. Today I want to add my post to the Aztec Theatre. I am a local theatre historian for San Antonio. I have collected the histories for 29 years. Back in the late eighties I was able to get into the Aztec when Tom Powers was manager. I was permitted on the stage and in the projection room. See these photos and more at http://www.satheatres.com/

I have created a website for the history of theatres in San Antonio. There were 5 Majestics and this was the last. Majestic Plaza Vaudeville, (Plaza), Majestic Empire Vaudeville (Empire), Majestic Theatre, served World War I soldiers, 9th and Broadway, Majestic (later State Theatre) and current Majestic, 226 E. Houston St. See more at http://www.satheatres.com/ San Antonio Theatres: Now & Then
