I spent 1971-1976 at McClellan Air Force Base, then Mather Air Force base, 1978-1982 and only once did I make the trek to the Tower Theater.. Boy do I regret it. I saw “Das Boot” there in 1981. Sound system was great and the building was a real treasure. I only wish I could have seen more movies there and not at the “Mega-Plexes”…..
Your right! I forgot about the “Creepy” dark section of the mall that you had to walk through to get to the theatre. Thanks for jogging the old memory.
This was the Drive In for families. I saw alot of westerns and war movies with my dad. They had a small playground in front of the screen, as I’m sure other drive ins did. My dad would bring his lawn chair and sit outside the car for the movie while we stayed in the car.He would always back the wagon into the stall so we could sit on the tailgate and when we would fall asleep all he had to do was close the tailgate and head home. Not a bad snack bar either. I can still see the people that lived across the way sitting on their cinderblock fences and watching the movies. Alot of memories from 1959 – 1965.
This was the only Theater in town to go see a movie at in 1962-1965. It was “BIG” and roomy. I lived near North Eastern Ave and Bonanza Road and would walk to the Huntridge for a Saturday show. On the way I would stop by the slot car track, about a block east of the Huntridge, and watch the cars race around the track. I can still remember walking down the aisle, to my seat with popcorn in hand. My last movie there was, “Viva Las Vegas”. After the show we would go over to the A & W Rootbeer stand across the street for a rootbeer float. It couldn’t get any better.
Great theatre. It was big and clean. last time I went there was in 1971. Saw a chick flick, “Friends”, with my date. Of course we didn’t call them “Chick Flicks” back then.
I seem to remember that the mall was a bit lame. One major store and a little bit of this and that.
The Victory Theatre wasn’t on Water Street. It was on a small street that was in between Navy and Panama. I am not sure if Army Street or Atomic Street would have extended across Market to give that little short road a name. If memory serves me right, it was on the corner of Panama across from the Fire Department. I can still remember being dropped off by the family station wagon for the saturday cartoons and a show. My mom still has a pearl ring that I found on the floor there, back in 1962. The drug store around the corner was another great place to go. Dad would take us boys over to the Barber Shop on Market Street for our monthly “Crew Cut” with a dab of Butch Wax..
