Anyone looking for historical pics and info on theaters in Stockton CA should visit historical Stockton on Facebook. Gene Wright has an archive that is superb and complete. That’s right Wright has them all

There were two Stockton Theaters named The Esquire. The one pictured above was next door to a luggage store and Union Bank to the right. Mostly 2nd run and B films it had its hey days when it managed to first run all the James Bond films except From Russia With Love. Not a big auditorium it had a small balcony.

The Ritz was a downtown mostly 2nd run film house although Road Show films like El Cid and Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines opened there. An art deco auditorium décor similar to The Stockton Theater helped.

The Lyric etc ended up the Lux and then The Uptown in the early 50’s before being demolished to become a Bank. Greatest and cheapest kid matinees in town.
