Well I have been at both the main theater and upstairs. The main area is way better. Very fancy decor. It’s too bad that the theater is in an area that lacks parking and surrounded by disrespectful teenagers.
Before I made the bay area home, I was a tourist then back in June 1995. I just stumbled on this theater because I didn’t know where in the world I was goin and noticed they were screening “Preist”. Since I had the time I went right on in. I cam back once more for another movie they had played “Love And Human Remains”. The unique thing that I liked about Gateway was their themed displays that they had for whatever movie is playing at the moment.

I have been at the famous Waikiki 3 theater both when it had its lucious palm trees and when they closed and reopened which I remember the movie Superman 3 was the new movie that just came out then. The center of the theater was the choice place to be at and I remember when I went to see Interview With The Vampire that the theater was jammed packed. It’s sad that All 3 theaters had to go. I do hope that someone will take a second try at opening another theater in Waikiki.
I was fortunate to have seen a few movies here before the Century 21 became no more. The movie “54” I saw at this theater and when I arrived I was amazed that this theater reminded me of home in Hawaii. Very big, screen shaped Cinerama like but its too bad that this theater is in a section of the city thats not attracting ticket buyers. And I didnt realize that they closed.

A favorite among locals and tourists of course. The Castro went thru a awesome makeover and I was really impressed when I was there for a movie showing. It’s not everday that I go there but a treat when I do, it’s usually a movie that The Castro is theater in town thats screening the movie.
Many memories of another grand twin theater thats no longer there. The Kuhio Twins as I remembered sat on the corner of Kuhio Avenue & the cross street (darn I forget) I always checked out and stared for hours at their streamline of current movie posters that were playing at the Cinerama, Kapiolani & Waikiki’s 1-3 which are no longer there. The interiors of the theater and lobby always fascinated me. The auditoriums were so dimly lit I often had a heck of a time trying to see where I was going.
I never got to see what the Hawaii Theater looks like now personally since I no longer live on the island but I have been there in the very much BEFORE look. This dates back to the early 80’s ( I duuno why above says that it closed in the late 70’s) and I felt I was surrounded by an aging movie palace crying for help. The theater closed for a couple of years and thank goodness that the theater went thru a tremendous makeover. I would be oooing and aaaah-ing if I was there.
Cinerama was the ONLY theater on Oahu that had a screen shaped as seen in the photo above. Cinerama was the hub of the 3 Star Wars movies which ran atleast a good year on each movie. In The 90’s Multiplexes where the thing to do and the survival single screen theaters began to look bleaker.
The Cinerama battled it out with unique ways to continue on but decided to bow out of the spotlight in 1999.
I hear that this theater is on the verge of folding because of the nearby University in need of space. I have had many memories at this classy twin movie palace.
