I also remember going here as a kid, but that was in the 50’s. The only title I can remember seeing was The Guns of Navarone, and I think most of the others we saw were war movies also. They always showed double features but we could never keep awake for both movies.
I will never forget the countdown to the second show with the cartoon guy constantly eating.
I do not see the Oxford here, but do recognize the steeple of The First Methodist Church down on the left. Many memories of this church which burned several times but fatally in the 50’s. It too is now just a parking lot since the church moved to West Front.
hsgolann – I believe your post of 4/27/2011, i believe youre referring to the Paramount on the corner of 2nd St and Park Ave. I attended a movie there once in the 50’s and all I remember of it is the ornate lobby with an open stairway in the lobby. That was long torn down when the whole block was demolished for the Plainfield Renovation project which died during the race riots of the early 70’s. Looks like some development may be finally happening, judging by Google street view.
I have yet to find out where the Oxford was located as I do not remember it from my 50’s to 60’s childhood growing up in Plainfield.
I am thinking this photo is from the late 50’s…definitely not 1982. The newest car I see is a 1959 Ford wagon. Look at the styles too. I don’t see Atari in the pic, and doubt that it even existed when this was taken.
I went to the Strand for many Saturday kid matinees …bought candy at Sav-On Drugs which is also visible in the picture.
i saw many movies at Blue Star, the most memorable being Apocalypse Now. Spent a lot of my youth at E J Korvettes, and Blue Star Bowling Lanes. Also bought cards at the knitting store near Korvettes. I couldn’t go to the SC until I got my license in 1966.
Before then, when to the Plainfield theaters that TC refers to. Many childhood Saturday matinees at the Strand and buying candy at Sav-On Drugs next store because it was cheaper. It’s all gone now.
I grew up in North Plainfield and now live in Westfield.
Isn’t that a 1959 Ford 3 cars up on the right?

Gotta Love the Chevette!!
This is about where the Surprise Store was located in the 50' and 60’s. You can see a small sign for Tepper’s Dept Store a little father down.

The most memorable movie I saw here was, unfortunately …..Deep Throat.
Apologies, i just saw your picture. What a change from the 50’s to the 80’s. Sad!
