I grew up in Maplewood and Roseland and remember going to the GCC Essex Green Cinema on many occasions. In particular, I remember going to a James Bond movie marathon there during the 1970’s and seeing the original Superman there during late 1978 or early 1979. It was just down the hill from Stern’s Department Store (now a Macy’s). Once the old theatre was demolished and moved to it’s new location up the hill, a new Shop Rite Supermarket was built in the area where it was situated.
I grew up in the neighboring town of Maplewood during the 1960’s and 1970’s and went to the Millburn Theatre (when it was one big theatre) on many occasions. One particular memory I have is going to the Millburn Theatre the night of the great NYC blackout of 1977 (July 13, 1977) with a friend and his parents. While viewing the movie, we were unaware the blackout had happened. I returned home from the movie only then to realize what had occured because the NYC TV stations were not broadcasting. Childhood memories!
I grew up in Maplewood and have many fond memories of going to the movies at the Maplewood Theatre during the 1970’s, when it was one big auditorium. I especially remember going to Saturday matinee or having pizza at the Roman Gourmet before or after a show. I recall as a very young kid, during which must have been the very late 1960’s or maybe 1970, of seeing live singers before the movie began -I think it was a Christmas show. Great memories!
I lived in South Florida during most of the 1980’s and part of 1990’s and have many fond memories of both the Pompano Cinema and Movies at Pompano. Both were on Federal Highway. However, I believe the Pompano Cinema was actually in Lighthouse Point while Movies at Pompano was in Pompano Beach. In any case, great memories of both.
