I worked at the Margate Theater and the projectionist taught me how to run a film through a projection machine. I was one of the “cute” candy girls that he got to mingle with when cutting through to go in/out of the booth. Wonderful old funny man named Bob, as I recall. It was owned & operated by the Franks. When I worked there in the 80s my father George Perry was the Franks General Manager of there theater chain all over New Jersey. In its place are now condos.

This building is still available for purchase. It was the LAST operating theater on the Absecon Islands. Worked there for many years. If anyone is interested in buying and attempting to revitalize it, if possible can contact me via email

There was a theater in Ventnor Heights called the Ventnor Plaza. My father, George Perry, relocated here from Massena NY to open it under perry management in the 60s. It was a dual movie theater. Played host to premieres, one I can recall was “Seduction” starring Morgan Fairchild, which her and the stars attended. My father hosted many FREE movie days in appreciation to those that served the community for the Local Policemen and their families (it was touching at his funeral some remembered and honored him by attending). He also made first run movies available to his children’s school and had buses of kids coming to theater for a day out to see a movie. He was very giving to the community and his empoyees at this theater. The bright orange ticket booth with the candy counter stand out in my memory most. It is the first place I ever worked or helped out. It was eventually sold to the Frank Family of Theaters that operated the remaining majority of theaters in the community. It reopened for a bit as other businesses, and now remains closed, believe due to damage from flood water from Hurricane Sandy.

The Charles Theater was owned by Charles Tannenbaum but run and operated by George Perry and Perry Management. It was a venue for many movie premieres as the casinos came revitalized Atlantic City. A movie premiere I recall it hosting was “Sammy Stops the World” with Sammy Davis Jr, which was about his life, and he and his buddies attended the opening with a gala at Caesars following it. This was the first of premieres I was allowed to finally attend being old enough. The Charles had a beautiful balcony and stayed up to the times as best as it could. It was the first theater at the time in the area to have the big sub wolfer speakers when the came out for Battle Star Gallactica. It was eventually sold to the casinos and became a parking lot.

Crazy Bob Maderas, was correct with the Beach Theater building was owned by Charles Tannenbaum, but leased, run, and operated by George Perry and Perry Management. It burnt down in the early 80s and never recovered. It was the last operating movie theater in Atlantic City and ran x-rated films at that time. It was actually a beautiful theater with balcony seats.

The Strand Movie theater was leased, run and operated by George R Perry and Perry Management. It was operated by him in the 70s at the time when the casinos were first opened. It was later sold by the owner (believe to be Charles Tannenbaum to the casino industry).
