I used to go to the Howard Theatre as a teenager, it re-opened right after I graduated from Our Lady of Grace in Howard Beach in 1957. Howard Beach was comprised of avenues and streets, 159 Road was an anomaly it was only one block wide between 102 and 103 streets. I remember seeing Love Me Tender at the New Howard. It didn’t last many years, the last time I went to a show there it was one of those wacky races where every one got a ticket on the way in and if the guy wearing the number on your ticket won the race, you got a prize. Those race shorts were the swan song of many a movie theatre in the NYC area in the 1950’s and 60’s as TV and theatre chains drove small independents out of business.
