Not only did the Rockne show good movies it was also a clean theater. Don’t ever recall the place looking shaby or dirty at all. Went to the Rockne from the mid 50’s to early seventies. Lived about six blocks away. I do recall though maybe in the late 50’s or early sixtes they re-did their lobby.
Thanks for the pic and info. Looks really run down in this picture. Must of been the 70’s or 80’s. Looking forward to your forthcoming info of this theater. But this is the Rialto that I remember. As a teenager when I went here with friends, we thought it was great. Between acts a vendor would would walk up and down the aisle selling fudgesicle’s. Yelling as he walked. “Let your tounge take a sleigh ride”. Comical at the time. They also had a comic MC who introduced the ladies. Don’t recall if there was a balcony or not. But there was one center aisle with seats on either side. No outside aisle’s that I can remember. Thanks for the memories.
Due you happen to know what the name of the other Theater was before it became the smaller Rialto? That is the one then that I remember going to as a teenager. From the pictures that I have seen of the orignal, they due look different from the theater I remember.
The first movie I saw at the Skyway was Bell, Book and Candle. Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak. My family was on our yearly vaction to Ellison Bay. We lived in Chicago at that time. My mothers best friend (Lolly Phiel) took me and my brother. I moved to Door County in 1975. One of my daughters, Emily (15)worked at the Skyway part time this past summer. It looks the same as it did back in the 50’s and 60’s. Except for the playground equipment. To many kids got hurt. Its a place were local kids can meet friends from school during summer vacation. Its been like that since it opened.

The one pet peeve I have at our theater, a Cinema Six, which is eighty miles there and back, is kids who put their feet on the back of the seat infront of them. I take my two girls, 15 and 12 and always warn them ahead if they do this, we will leave. I see young adults do this also. Who wants to have a dirty foot in flipflops or snow boots on the back of their head.
Saturday and Sunday matinee are the best days for us to go. And cheapest $5.50 a seat. Which means alot of kids with parents. And alot of kicking the seats and heads of the ones in front of them.
I recall as a Teenager going to the Rialto one time with boyhood friends. We had fake ID’s. Went to see the dancers(Strippers). They also showed a nudist movie. I guess you could call that an Adult movie. This was back in 1966 or 67. Pretty tame stuff for todays generation.
You can see a picture of what it looked like in 2000 as a Church. Not a very good picture. www.cookcountyassessor.com

Memories don’t serve us well sometimes. I was very young when the theater closed. The story was that a Veteran bought the theater and changed the name from the Iris to the Vet. What I do remember is, and talking to my brother about this, was the construction of the parking garage next to the Chateau. The Banquet Hall was already there at this time, but it looked new on the inside and out. Would love to see the picture of the Iris.
I can remember standing in line with my friends holding big bags of greassy popcorn waiting to get in for a Saturday matinaee. Usually acouple of horror movies like I was a Teenage Frankestein or Terror from the year 5000.I’m still a big fan of old B horror movies. The ushers wore uniforms. I really wanted that job! The show would be packed. I believe the managers first name was Jim. I remember going to see A man Called Horse and Little Big Man. These were the two movies they played last before going Adult. The whole neighborhood turned out to try and show them that they could still make money from these kind of movies. At least this is the way I remember it.
I grew up in that neighborhood in te 50’s . I lived 942 N. Waller Ave. My father was born in 1907 and lived there most of his life. I was under the impression that the theater was razed and then Chateau Royale was built. Some how I remeber it changing to the Vet. You can see a picture of it the way it looked in 2000 at www.cookcountyassesor.com Put in the address and it will come up. Although its not a great picture, you can still see part of it.
