It was a shop for a while, I think a fabric shop? There was no access from the Westfield, you had to go back out into Burwood Rd and in the old theatre entrance. I can’t remember when that closed, but I think it had stopped being a shop for some time before the site was redeveloped.
The Event cinema is on the south side of Victoria St, a few hundred metres from the Hoyts site.
There is a facebook group that share memories of the old Westfield – https://www.facebook.com/Oldburwoodwestfield/?tn=%2Cd%2CP-R&eid=ARDJvNnQXnGBu9cPEDqp9FcIw2oulHhMGBCTvWmpafKdj6eJUIjyICP-ylcUkP8PfNAN2qsR9n62UPW2
A while ago there was an aerial photo showing how the old cinema was incorporated into the 1966 building. The cinema roof is clearly visible.
The Forum theatre was down the road from the University of Technology (or NSW Institute of Technology as it then was). Dave’s Encore cinema operated there for a while in the early 80s, after having moved from another old cinema in the city. I remember seeing Dr Strangelove there in 1980, as part of their “Offical Silly Day” which was an all day screening of classic comedies.
How about the twin cinema that was at Stanmore on Parramatta Rd between Northumberland Ave and Percival Rd? I think it was called teh Stanmore Twin, and before that was the Z Twin Cinema. When the Broadway shopping centre opened with the new Hoyts multiplex in about 1999 or 2000, Stanmore couldn’t keep up. Audiences evaporated overnight, it closed and was demolished soon after. A shame, as it was a good place with a cafe and bar, and a multi-ticket deal.
Hi all, just fount this wonderful site! I’m enjoying reading about places that I went to as a kid.
I grew up near the Palatial but only went there once in the early 70’s, not long before it stopped operating as a cinema.
There was also a short period when the building was used to house Burwood Municipal Libary after a fire in the library, not sure of the date, but maybe around 1976-1977?

Found this link to Dave’s Encore cinema. Sadly almost nothing on line about this.

Daring Dave’s moved to the Forum in George St for a short time in 1980.

The building has been sold apparently – there is advertising on the front for a new apartment development. :–(
