The problem with this theater and the remnants of other old theaters in the Times Square area by the 1980’s was the smell. I usually chose to see movies on the east side in the newer houses for this reason.
I cut school and saw a British import titled Venom with Klaus Kinski and Oliver Reed in 1982 in the upper theater. I was the only one there in what still remained a very large, opulent, and cavernous space!
I am fairly certain that the 68th Playhouse is where I saw “A Hungarian Fairy Tale”, a little known film that still haunts me to this day.
