Regarding the wall, which was actually more of a fence. Remember that the ground level that the drive-in was at was well below the level of the South-East Expressway, which is elevated at that point. You can still see that when you drive by there today. So when you would drive by, you could only see the top 1/3rd of the screen. As I recall, the fence was mounted on top of the guard rail of the expressway. As such, the fence was only something like 10 feet high, which was high enough to block the view of the top part of the screen from the expressway.
It’s been 2 years since my comment above. The Milford Drive-In is still going strong! I was there a few weeks ago. It’s also still $20 a car for up to 6 people.
I don’t know what “milforddriveinsucks” is complaining about above. He paid to see one movie then he thinks he can get another one for free. So what does he do at an indoor multi-theater? Does he sit and watch one movie and when it’s over does he get up and go into another theater and watch another movie for free? What an idiot! They should have called the cops on him. What he did was theft of service.
And finally, of course, the Milford Drive-In doesn’t suck regardless of what this moron says.
One thing I remember from the Neponset Drive-In was that I saw the movie “McHale’s Navy” there. It was a spin off from the TV show, which was a favorite of mine. One thing I remember vividly was that I still only had black and white TV at the time and when the movie started at the drive-in and everything was in color it blew my mind!
At the end of its life the owners of the Neponset Drive-In turned to showing adult movies. As a result they had to put up a wall to block the view of the screen from cars passing on the highway.
I’ve been going to the Milford Drive-in for over 15 years. It’s a great place where you can have a great family time. It’s $20 for up to 6 people to see 2 recent movies that are always good ones and not “B” movie junk. You can also bring in your own food, which makes it a very affordable night out.
I went to this drive-in many times as a child. One thing I remember was that it had a miniature railroad that ran around the outside of the theater. You could sit in the cars in the back and ride.
My family used to vacation in Dennis during the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. We used to visit the Dennis Drive-in very often. I can remember going there in my pajamas.
I visited the site in 1992 and was saddened to find that it was now an industrial park. All that was left were the foundations for the box office and projection building/snack bar and a few speaker poles.
On the bright side that visit peaked my interest in drive-ins again causing me to check out the Milford Drive-in in Milford New Hampshire near where I now live. About 2 weeks later we took my two-year old to the drive-in and we’ve been doing that 2 or 3 times a year ever since. So, a family tradition begun at the Dennis Drive-in continues until today.
I wonder if my parents are sitting in one of the cars in the photo.
