The area where the Royal was located is now a multilevel parking lot. Most of the demolished theater locations in downtown Kansas City are now parking lots.
Theater opened approximately 1983, closed 1998. At present the theater sits empty. There were some incidents of vandalism and a shooting which prompted the closing of this theater.
I received my first kiss in this theater. The theater location is now a social security office. It was located in the 1600 block of 63rd St. on the north side of the street in the Metro Plaza Shopping Center which is still there.
On the northeast corner today there is a Church’s Chicken. Before that there was a Sherman’s barbeque restaurant(very good barbeque, too). I went to Blenheim School on the nw corner in the third grade. Bruce Watkins freeway is a block east.
The correct address is 3935 Prospect Ave and the Mount Vernon Baptist Church occupies the building today. I have attended this church on a few occasions.
A car wash occupies the site today. Once there was a lounge here on this site which was owned by former Kansas City Chief player Otis Taylor back in the early 70’s.

This was my all-time favorite drive-in. Took many a date to this one including my wife.
Believe it or not the old Sun theater is now a church. Kansas City is known for turning its old theaters into churches.
Does anybody have a picture of this theater? My dad used to take my mom here and buy her flowers across the street at Ed’s Florists at 601 E 31st st.
