I worked at the Valley Circle from 1969-1973. What memories . A few years ago I spent days at the downtown San Diego Public library copying movie sections from the SD Union and Tribune.
I have been to this site in awhile. Having been a usher from 1969-1973… regarding OLIVER!..I saw the 35mm film with the projectionist. He was disappointed that they did not get a 70mm print. Back then San Diego was not a big city and to see OLIVER! in 70mm one had to drive up to LA… The projectionist also turned off the surrounds because they had a “whistle”. I had to sell hot dogs at intermission while holding the souvenir program and the page opened to Fagin holding a sausage …embarassing!
I also remember “FORTUNE AND MENS EYES..The manager was very upset showing that film…:–).
The weeks of BOB AND CAROL AND TED AND ALICE and also MASH…the theater was always packed with long lines outside. It did not matter how many times I watched it, the laughter was infectious.
The Capri featured many first run “roadshow” films. Around the World in 80 Days….Gigi….Ben Hur…..West Side Story…… Spartacus…..Mutiny on the Bounty……Cleopatra……Thoroughly Modern Millie.
I worked at the Valley Circle from OLIVER! ( I had to open the OLIVER program to the photo of Fagin holding a sausage as the manager thought it would help sell hot dogs:–)) to PAPILLON as an usher. I remember the manager Art Paulson. Nice man but was shocked as the films got more and more explicit!
I remember 2 Sneak Previews….One was the original X rated version of WHERE"S POPPA? and also the 12 CHAIRS.
The OLIVER print was 35mm and stereo. I remember the projectionist telling me hoe disappointed that we did not get a 70mm print) He also virtually turned off the surrounds because he did not like the high pitched “whistle” coming from the surrounds.
Also the 70mm print of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG was replaced with a 35mm one two weeks into the run.
I grew up in San Diego during the 60’s and remember going to see the opening film at the Cinema 21 ( Originally part of “Statewide theatre chain….then FOX West Coast….then Mann theaters……55 DAYS AT PEKING. I used to write down every movie I saw there…..I found my partial list…..so here…not in necessarily in order are films that played at Cinema 21….. I spent many hours making copies of the San Diego Tribune movie section at the main library in downtown SD.( late 50’s—-60’s and early 70’s) Fun too look at all those great ads!
I also worked at the Vally Circle…from 69-74.
We played A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and we had to leave flyers all over the city as the film was X rated.
