I am one of the owners of the Rex Theater since 1995. Yes, we are struggling but we have managed to keep movies running seasonally during the winter holiday season and during the summer. Additionally, the theater has a stage that is home to the Community Chamber Orchestra.

Floyd Schultz built the theater in 1920 as a “combination house” (stage and roll-up screen). Although a fixed screen was installed sometime in the 1980s, we restored the roll-up screen and stage, as well as the proscenium, with a grant from Kansas Department of Commerce.

I would also like to note that although several buildings in the downtown have been restored, the City of Clay Center had nothing to do with it. Restoration work on the theater was done through our private funds and the grant from the state of Kansas. Other downtown buildings were restored by their owners with assistance from the Clay Center Main Street association.
