I had the privilege of attending the West Shore twice in the past 8 or so years as I have a friend who lives in New Cumberland. Quite an experience. So wonderful that it’s still around. Reminded me of my days in the neighborhood theaters of Brooklyn. These works of art and “dream palaces” should indeed be considered worth preserving for so many reasons.
I adored this place. Saw some of the best American and foreign films there as a child. Remember it well. We used to take two buses from Crown Heights to get there, the only place in the area where films like “La Strada” and “Member of the Wedding” were shown.
I grew up not far from the Rogers and spent a lot of time there too. I remember going there with my mother to see “From Here to Eternity,” and other great films. I lived across the street from the Crown and we used to go to the Rogers, the Astor in Flatbush, Loews Kameo and Kings and the Patio too. I have great memories of all these wonderful places.
I only knew it as the Crown having been born near the time of the name change. I lived across the street on Balfour Place and spent a lot of time there. Very happy memories. I was devastated when it closed and was replaced by a supermarket.
Wonderful photo. Thanks!
