My mother worked for Berlo Vending Company in the early ‘50’s. She managed the concession stand at South Park some time during that period. I spent any nights at the drive-in as I went to work with her (as a pre-schooler) and my father would pick me up later.
The most exciting thing I remember about South Park was a fireworks display gone wrong.Often, the drive-ins would have fireworks as a special attraction. On this occasion, one of the first firework shells came down live on the other canisters and the entire collection went off at once. It was some grand finale!
My mother worked as the concession stand manager at the Greentree Drive-in from 1953 to 1955 or thereabouts. Berlo Vending Company ran the concession stands at Greetree, South Park, and many other drive-ins in the Pittsburgh area. She worked for Berlo. I spent many evenings at Greentree. My father worked at a coal mine in Imperial. I went to work with my mother and my father would pick me up later in the evening at the drive-in. I had an excellent collection of bottlecaps scavenged from the grounds. I think I saw every Debbie Reynolds “Tammy” movie made.
