I thought you might be interested to know that I posted this photo on my website and heard someone from the Santa Monica Conservancy who said: “Our research indicates that the theater, which was designed by prolific theater architect Norman Alpaugh, opened in 1934.”
You say that this cinema opened in 1938 however both the movies playing here “Man of Two Worlds” and “Bolero” opened in 1934. Was it a second-run house? Playing movies that are four years old seems unlikely…?
