IMO, the best solution for the Miller is to knock out the back wall and extend the stage back. For many reasons – 1) preserve 1500 seat capacity 2) add more dressing rooms downstairs 3) add more restrooms downstairs 4) create new load in door which will keep 18 wheelers from completely blocking Ellis Street.

Anyone have information on how the Tivoli made the stage larger? Did they take out a back wall and move the stage back or did they move forward and lose seating? Any help on details of how they enlarged the stage to accommodate a Symphony is greatly appreciated.

Henry41 – Thanks for visiting Friends of the Miller website. I did extensive research a number of years back regarding the history of the Miller. Pretty much maxed out my website with findings. Peter Knox has agreed to give the Miller Theatre to the local Symphony and they have been appropriated with $5.2M SPLOST dollars (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) for restoration. The Symphony’s plans are a well kept secret so not much details to provide concerning their progress.

Hello to all. Friends of the Miller is back!! The panel referenced above was known as the Hub Board built by Hub Electric out of Chicago. Someone made a reference to the size of the Miller stage in comparison to the Imperial. The Miller stage is considerably wider but the Imperial is deeper and the Miller has more wing space. One big difference is dressing rooms – the Miller has 10 dressing rooms below the stage. When restored, the Miller’s seating capacity will be approximately 1550 however, I understand the Symphony may modify the seating which will drastically reduce the capacity.

Mike, many thanks for the rescued item related to the Dreamland, Rialto, Imperial, Modjeska & Miller, all theatres owned and operated by Augusta Amusements. How sad a day to see the “Ticket Sales Report” wind up in some dumpster. You’re a theatre hero for saving this item and many others. Your find has given us an idea for a Classic Movie Night. Will keep you updated.

Stay tuned as we announce another “Classic Movie Night”. A Laurel & Hardy 1938 classic “Blockheads” and we’re bringing to town the only living cast member from the movie. This event will be a fund raiser to “Save Augusta’s Historic Theatres”. Should be a fun event.

Want to guess the cost for Paul Simone to paint both murals?? Remember the year was 1939.–

Those Seminude Paintings have a number of interesting stories behind them. Paul Simone was the artist and those paintings appear to be an afterthought as the original plans for the Miller called for a pipe organ. That idea was scratched at the last minute as the electronic Hammond organ was new to the market. Frank Miller’s wife wanted a pipe organ but due to cost overruns the Hammond won out likewise the artwork was inserted in place of pipes. Probably never noticed that one of the dancers has 2 left feet? I didn’t either until a gueston a recent tour pointed it out. Mystery – Was that Paul Simone’s signature?

The Miller would have been to the left just out of range. The Miller didn’t open until February 1940 – maybe this postcard was before that time because as beautiful as the theatre was/is the artist would have definitely captured its beauty. There is a great photo taken in 1950 of Broad Street that shows the Miller, Imperial, Rialto, and Modjeska. Unfortunately, the Dreamland burned in 1945. All great theatres and from 1931 until 1968 – all owned and managed by Augusta Amusements.

I did some research on the Art Theatre located on the 500 block of Broad. When I went in a couple years ago the projection booth was still there but, of course, no equipment. I did a little research on it but would like to hear more. Many thanks for saving items from the Miller that were headed for the dumpster. I keep all the items found in safe storage and would love to add to the collection those items you located. Makes you rather ill to think of how much was actually tossed from our historic theatres into dumpsters.

The doors to Paul Simon Theater at Ft. Discovery open at 5:45PM. The movie starts at 6:30PM but make sure you are at the theater by 6:00PM as we will have the red carpet walk. You will definitely want to stay around after the movie as Thom Bresh will take the stage and perform a tribute to his father. Merle Travis.

It will be so exciting to have past employees of Augusta’s downtown theatres in the house!!
