A vivid childhood memory: My mom taking the family (Dad was working second shift) in 1970 to see BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES at the East Twin, most of which I missed because I was trying to sneak a peak in the rear view mirror at the movie playing behind us on the West Twin screen, Russ Meyer’s X-rated BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS.
For the latter half of 1985, it was owned by Ed Bebko, a theater operator from Buffalo looking to expand his business. It ran second run films but didn’t catch on.
My childhood neighborhood theater. The photo must be from its last days – note the Visa logo on the furniture store: that didn’t exist until 1975, so the photo is probably at least a few years after that. When I worked at the Riviera in North Tonawanda in the 1980s, I loved knowing that parts of the Genesee survived there.
