I remember when Back to the Future played there for almost 5 months in 1985. Not often now in 2017 that a movie plays at a theater for that length of time.
I remember on 8/18/85, I got home from sleep away camp from being away for 7 weeks and couldn’t wait to get back to see a movie at the theater. I had my parents take me straight to the theater from the camp pick up site. The movie I saw in this night was Summer Rental with John Candy!
This theater will always be special to me! It was 9/15/07 that I went on my 1st date with my wife at this theater. We met up at the theater and we saw The Brave One with Jodie Foster and we started holding hands right away and felt an in stand connection! Yes, Me and my wife were attached immediately and be in true love ever since!
Saw “The Terminator” and “Poltergeist” at this theatre, was very unique with the size and layout, remember when it closed that it was abruptly with no advanced announcement from what I remember, Critical Condition was the last film playing there, When the Marriott Marquis hotel opened across the street in 1985 and this theatre closing in 1987, it was the start of cleaning up the seediness of Times Square from 1970’s and ‘80’s to where it is now as an appealing place to go have fun.
As I wrote in a previous post I saw The Gods Must Be Crazy at this theatre and remembered it played there from October 1984-April 1986, that’s 18 months, The Goodbye People was the next film to play there which I did see there, couldn’t believe one film played at a same theatre for 18 straight months other than the Rocky Horror Picture Show, can’t see how that can happen in 2015
This theatre will always be unique for the different types of films that play there that don’t play at the mega-plex theatres, also in 2015 it’s not easy for single movie houses to survive in NYC with the big mega theatres that have opened and rent being so high anywhere in NYC now. Hope this one stays around!
Both theatres had lower level and upper level seating, I always sat upstairs, some films I saw there were National Lampoons European Vacation, Better Off Dead, City Heat and The Protector
It was on Fathers Day 1984 that we saw The Karate Kid in the Baronet side, also saw Karate Kid II in 1986. Clue and Jagged Edge I saw in the Coronet side.
The theatre was unique for the big lobby and balcony, the lobby had a big sitting area, very few theatres that are around in 2015 like this one, the staff was always nice and even remembered people who were frequent guests there. The first movie I saw there was on 10/27/84 was the Paul McCartney film Give My Regards to Broadstreet. I also saw Wall Street, The Pick Up Artist and others.
Saw a number of films at this theatre such Evil Under the Sun, All of Me, Turk 182, Fast Forward, Protocol, Sluggers Wife, I was there on the last day of operation for this theatre in spring of 1985 and the last movie I saw here before closing was Just One of the Guys.
Too bad not many of these twin theatres are not around in 2015
Show Biz Pizza family entertainment place was right next door to this theatre. Great way to go have dinner, play games, get prizes, enjoy Pizza and then a movie night!
I came down from NYC to visit my family in Tampa in December 1982 for the holidays and it was my first time to this theatre and I saw Airplane 2-the Sequel.
Saw many films at this theatre before it closed as, it stayed open a few months after 84th Street 6 opened and closed before June 1985. The last film I saw at this theatre was Girls Just Want to Have Fun!
My parents took my sister and I to quite a few movies there in the late ‘70’s and early '80’s during the summertime when we spent the weekends at our grand parents house in the hamptons. It was so much fun sitting in chairs outside watching movies on a huge screen! The first movie I know I saw there when I was 6 years old was Star Wars in 1977 and became a huge fan ever of the series ever since. Meatballs with Bill Murray was another one I remember seeing there as well as a few others. Its too bad that it closed down. I have been to the shopping center to shop and the memories of the times there really come back to me when we shop there. Have not seen too many drive-ins around since this one.
I saw the “Gods must be Crazy” at this theatre with my father in the winter of 1985. I remember waiting on line to get in and it was freezing outside. Also I recall the film played there for 18 months from September 1984-March 1986. Not often that a film stays at a theatre for that long and certainly not now in 2010. To me, this theatre was the last one’s of the single screen houses.

It was Thanksgiving Day weekend 1992 that I was home from Florida from college for the weekend. The movie I saw that weekend was Disney’s Aladdin!

It was sad to see this place close. I always thought the theater brought a closeness to the Celebration Community.

I saw the Talking Heads music film Stop Making Sense at this theatre when it was called 57th Street Playhouse

It was a unique kind of movie theatre. One film I remember seeing there was Prizzi’s Honor in 1985. Not many theaters like this one around in 2015
It was a real unique theatre, 1st movie I saw there was Big Trouble in Little China on 7/3/86 which was the day the movie came out.
This theatre used to be called Loews New York Twin, saw a number of films there, 1st film I saw at this one was Ghostbusters in 1984!

Me and my Mom went to opening day at the theatre on 3/15/85 and we saw Lost in America with Albert Brooks.
