Dear Tantive7
I remember when that moviehouse began to show Spanish Movies, before the Comodore did..The republic was almost gone by then. So we had downtoun Brooklyn or Greenpoint to go to see a good show..and yes I wish someone would post a pic also, it has been a long time for me also.anniegirl
Dear Lovethetheaters, and what about Stevens Ice Cream next door to the Williamsburgh..all that candy, cartoons, and soft serve Ice Cream afterwards.WOW…anniegirl
Dear Dorianne,
When did your dad own the Comodore? I used to go there as a kid between the years 1952-1970. I loved that theater. Every Saturday I was there with friends…I remember the matron with the flashlight telling every kid to be quiet. The ladies room had brown couch’s to sit on and when the J train passed by the place would tremble..I remeber the soda machine, the cup would drop down and the syrup and seltzer would mix. It was right next to the candy counter. And the movies, that played there, great for the neighborhood. I remeber when we used to be able to sit in the balcony. Wow. at night. My Mom, Aunts and Uncle’s would go at night. Now it is just a memory.
But a great memory. Give my regards to your dad for many a great time any kid could have. I lived 70 Penn Street and then on 700 Bedford Ave at Heyward Street then 35 Lynch Street and lastly 258 Marcy Ave at Keap Street. Went to Transfiguration School 1952-1960.anniegirl
hey Jayar 1 . I now live on Long Island also. Shirley NY. I get that same felling of Home when I visit friends in Williamsburgh. It’s is ironic that we miss “Home”. I know whenever I talk to my lifelong friend who still lives in Williamsburgh, I feel homesick when we talk about our growing up there and all the good times..and we talk about going to the movies like the Williamsburgh and the Commodore and of coarse the Republic… many happy memories there. I thread to Bway and yes he has a wealth of knowledge about the classic moviehouses…anniegirl
Dear Tentive, When did you go to the Williamsburgh, I went as a kid of 7 in 1952 on Saturday’s. Like 25 cartoons and 2 features. But this moviehouse was badly kept and a lot of little visitors crawling around the floor so we did not go there very often. Right next door ws Stevens Ice Cream Stand. They had great Ice Cream Cakes and Soft Ice Cream back in the day when Carvel was unheard of. I have no pictures of the inside of the theater but I wonder if anyone else has. So anyone on this thread has any pictures, please post..Thanks anniegirl
Dear Jayer1,
Enjoyed the pic’s. I was born and raised in Williamsburgh and used to see the Gates and Bushwick theaters while on the J train going to Jamaica to shop. thanks again for the memories. anniegirl
Dear Bway and Peter K
Buildings change but our memories will always be there and as for the Meserole the behind-the-scene’s are still intact, how wonderful is that…anniegirl
Dear Bway, any current pic’s of this moviehouse…I remember the loft’s candy store on the corner of Manhattan and Noble street. I vaguley remember seeing a movie in this moviehouse. I think it was a comedy with Jerry Lewis. but can’t remember the title…I can remember in 1966 or later that the RKO was still a working moviehouse.anniegirl
Dear Bway,
I clicked on your post and got a perfect pic of the Mezzie. Great photo. I along with my husband Lou and my mom and dad went to see the French Connection at the Meserole..What a quaint moviehouse here in the garden spot of the world..Love Greenpoint many memories for me as a Williamsburghite keep em coming Bway……anniegirl
dear all, ok it’s just that I am not old enough to see any shantytowns in my time. However living in Williamsburgh, i did travel with my mom to the lower east side of manhattan and i remember the bowery with all of the homeless there in the 1950’s. I was afraid to get out of the car. I surely hope it does not return to those days of homelessness. But woh knows what lies ahead. Next to the Commodore theater was the glenwood hotel and in the summer when we exited the movie, we walked down to the ice cream parlor run by 2 brothers that were quite portly in stature. That hotel was surly a place for homeless men. They were hanging out the window and they looked hopeless. That was in the 1950’s. Does anyone have any similar stories. I am now 63 years of age and I was affected by those experiences. Anniegirl
Hi you all, Shantytowns? I never remeber Williamsburgh being a shantytown…..And yes there has been a revitilization in all bouroughs…except Far Rockaway, Queens. I only hope that if they build a condo or strip mall at the site, they name it the Commodore Plaza in memory of that fine moviehouse. Anniegirl
Dear John,
You sure remember a lot about the RKO Greenpoint. I can still see that theater next to the Lofts Candy Store on Manhattan Ave at Noble Street. I only went to that Moviehouse twice prior to it’s demise. I loved going to Greenpoint and do some shopping and going to the Meserole also. Great Memories. Anniegirl
Hi all,
Because I live on Long Island, I have not had the chance to get to Brooklyn to see the empty space where a moviehouse of my childhood once stood..What are they going to build in that space? Does anyone know? Anniegirl
Dear Warren, I made a copy of the advertising to show to my husband and we watch TCM when a good old movie is playing. Since he was raised in Astoria, he will remember the Triboro….Thanks for the info..anniegirl
Maybe the movies were held over because of the audiance volume for a particular movie that was appearing at the time. ie Gone with the Wind and others.anniegirl
When I was a kid of the 1950’s, there was a Bond Mens Clothing Store next to the Met and a Schraffts on the Left of the Met. That Crawford Stores was a Staple store back then and yes Nedick’s was the best.. On that same side of the street stood a Chock full of Nut’s Coffee Shop in the late 60’s. But the Met lived on in the 60’s. I always thought the Met was a exclusive Theater. I always as a kid went to local moviehouses such as the Commodore, Marcy, Republic, Meserole. RKO Greenpoint Theaters in my neighborhood of Williamsburgh and Greenpoint.. It was a treat to go to the Paramount and the Fox and of coarse the Met with my Parents.. Also a treat to go to the Automat on Fulton and Jay Streets. And a real treat to go to Juniors for special occasions..Always good memories revisiting the Brooklyn Memories of Fulton Street. Remember McCrory’s across from Mays Department Stores. I loved the Waffles and Ice Cream they served in front of the store facing Fulton Street.. It was the competition for Woolworths..next to A&S..Speaking of A&S do you remember the downstairs Childrens Department and the Horse ride for the kids while partents shopped for shoes for them? and of coarse the resturant in the basement and the frozen dessert near the back escalater in the luggage department…I spent most of my Saturday’s as a child in A&S with my Mother, sister, and Aunt’s in A&S and sometimes in the Met. Sorry to say the old Fulton Street is not the same anymore..Oh well thanks for the trip down memory lane. anniegirl
JOHN,
I THOUGHT IT WAS BOHACKS. MY MOM AND DAD USED TO GO SHOPPING THERE. MY DAD ALWAYS PARKED ACROSS THE STREET NEAR THE BANK AND WE STAYED IN THE CAR WHILE MY PARTENTS SHOPPED AND WE WERE GOOD KIDS IN THE CAR.. I REMEMBER MANHATTAN AVE AND ALL OF THE STORES. JOHN DO YOU REMEMBER THE DRESS STORE THAT WAS NEXT TO THE RKO. MM AUNTS WOULD BUY STOCKINGS IN THERE BUT I CANNOT REMEMBER THE NAME. IT DEFINATLEY WAS NOT RAINBOW SHOPS. IT HAD ANOTHER NAME IN THE 60’S.. BUT MY PARENTS WENT TO BUY MEAT AT TRUNZ. THE STORE WAS NEXT TO SAINT ANTHONY’S THEN THERE WAS A CARVEL STORE NEXT I THINK? THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES JOHN AND ALL..ANNIEGIRL
