Odeon have announced that the cinema will reopen before Christmas. As, “ Mary Poppins returns,” is to open in the UK just a few days before Christmas, i expect that this will be the opening movie. The movies technical spec will suit Dolby Cinema wll.
I feel certain that the picture house closed as a cinema in may 1967 just prior to the opening of the ABC on cleveland street, with all staff & the Manager,Len Key, moving to the new cinema.
Chances are that ABC finally sold the picture house in october that year.
An amendment about KES. Although filmed in 1969, KES was only given private press screenings that year. The World Premiere was,on Wednesday March 25th 1970, at ABC DONCASTER, with cast, crew, film studio executives & the Mayors of both Doncaster & Barnsley attending, along with members of the public, who could buy tickets to the event.
Have read in todays ,“Doncaster Star,” that there has been fire damage to the roof this last weekend, & it now seems certain the building will have to be demolished .
I believe the Top Rank is now called Trilogy.
I seem to remember visiting the Essoldo with my father, when i was still a child, to see,“ Above us the waves.” As i recall, there was great excitement concerning the Stereo sound.

Having checked the, “ ianvisits,” site. A picture does show 2 Auditoria sited at right angles to each other.
I believe that the movement of the screen backwards is only used to facilitate a live performance, & should mean that the Tabs are used at all times.
The building is now being restored as a live music venue at a cost of £22 million.
