The Palace Theater first opened its doors in 1939 and has been family owned and operated ever since.

Originally, the theater held only one screen. It was a show piece for the latest cinema productions of its time. The passing years brought many updates including a second auditorium and modern seating.

Film exhibition over the past 80 years hadn’t changed much until early 2000s when digital cinema came on to the market. By 2014, 35mm film was becoming obsolete so the theater launched a Kickstarter campaign. The campaign was a success so the theater was able to convert both projectors from 35mm film to digital. The sound and picture quality was dramatically improved and will allow the Palace to continue showing the best of Hollywood, in downtown Spooner, for many years to come!

Endsley, an owner of Orca Theaters on Kalifornsky Beach Road in Soldotna, has traded in the old 35 mm film projectors for all-digital systems. Friday, December 17, 2010

“Technology is unbelievable,” she said. “You will be amazed the difference.”

Instead of metal cases heavily loaded with reel-to-reel film, the movies come on hard drives that download to a server and project onto the screens.

“My new projectors are pretty much a big computer,” she said.

Orca Theater also installed new 13-by-24-foot silver screens, which are needed for
3D, she said.

“It’s so much sharper and brighter,” Endsley said about the image. “We have new surround sound and new speakers to completely just top it off.”

As the big 3D opening tonight the theater will be showing the computer animated “Yogi Bear.”

“I’m very overwhelmed but very, very excited,” Endsley said.

The former Redwood Theatre on Mill Street was purchased by The Redwood Theatre Group, LLC to restore the historic property to an operating theater. At 7:00 pm on December 3, 2015 at the Redwood Falls Library we need a few citizens to “step up” and become directors, (and eventually officers) of “The Friends of the Redwood Theatre.” This will be a not- for-profit group to help us restore our great theatre. Very easy. No investment needed. Limited liability, (no personal financial responsibility) Come to the meeting for a full explanation. We need your help! http://www.sos.state.mn.us/index.aspx?page=1089

This was the last season for this Drive In. it has been sold and will not show movies going forward. Posted: Sep 08, 2015 5:38 PM CDT

Eau Claire (WQOW) – It may have been Gemini’s best year of business in five years, but the profit wasn’t enough to break even.

The general manager said they’ve never made a profit off of the theater and it wasn’t doing well when they bought it five years ago either . The theater only takes up 10 of the 40 acres. The owners were hoping to sell the land the theater wasn’t using, but Eau Claire Co-Op Oil Company wants to buy the entire 40-acres.

DRIVE-OUT: GEMINI TO BE SOLD TO EAU CLAIRE OIL COMPANY

“It has by far been the hardest decision we’ve had to make and we come out here on Friday nights and we see the families out here and it just breaks our heart, you know to have to say goodbye to it unfortunately,” Dan Olson, the theater’s general manager, said.

For now, the owners plan to keep the equipment. They hope to relocate somewhere but don’t know if, or how, that will happen. The land still hasn’t officially been purchased.

Eau Claire’s own downtown budget theater celebrates its grand re-opening tonight with more than a few changes to show for its extensive remodeling. At the Micon Cinemas Downtown Budget Cinema and Marquee Restaurant, all of the films have now gone digital, a 50-seat screening room was added to the second level, and a restaurant now serves food and beverages to moviegoers. In addition to the theater’s high quality popcorn, the restaurant will serve pizza, sandwiches, flatbread, pulled pork, and alcoholic beverages like beer and wine. While alcohol will be served, the owners say it is a secondary focus to the restaurant, and the theater is still a great family experience. The concessions stand at the newly re-opened theater. The new concessions stand. The owners, Mike and Connie Olson of Micon Cinemas, intend to use these changes, along with a slight rebranding, to bring more independant, rare and award-winning films to the culture of downtown Eau Claire. With the new upstairs screening room, they’re planning events like a Saturday morning cartoon block, private showings, and maybe even a film festival. Above all, they want give people more reasons to spend a night out at the movies. Tickets will still cost $4/adult and $3/child (Tues. $3/$2). Tonight they’ll be showing the academy award winner for best animated picture Big Hero Six [PG], a family-friendly, action adventure and the winner for best picture Birdman: Or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance [R], a comedy-drama. This seems like an incredible investment in the culture and future of downtown Eau Claire and this moviegoer intends to be a frequent patron. Head to Miconcinemas.com for showtimes and to learn more. The theater is located at 315 S. Barstow St.

WE MADE IT! (mostly) Thank you everyone for all the support this Summer. It has been a record season. Although we fell short of our fundraising goal, we have gotten close enough and made a few deals to start installing projectors! We will not be able to do everything we wanted and in the next year or so there will be additional upgrades, so we will continue to need your support. Again, thank you.

The Owners Steve Thompson and Marcya and Grant Grudzina We love movies, pure and simple.

We are pleased to introduce Dubuque’s independent theater to our community. We know it’s not always possible to see the great films outside of the studio system released each year. The foreign films that are causing a stir. The critically acclaimed but small studio films that don’t play on multiplex screens long, if ever. The classic movies that were always best on the big screen but have not been accessible that way in years. In short, the movies you love but don’t see ads for on television.

But we are so much more than just an independent theater. Mindframe is a home for cultural events of many kinds. Live theatrical performances, private parties, concerts and everything else your heart and mind can conjure.
