Chuck, the streets of Piedmont are not in the city of Piedmont. That area is actually Oakland. Being an Oaklander, I just wanted to set you straight. Just like Rockridge, Montclare village and the Claremont hotel are actually in the city of Oakland.
The lux had one of the prettiest marques. The front had the ticket booth and on one side there was a hot dog window. All done in shiny chrome. They had the best hot dogs.
Never went there as there was too many black youths that would start fist fights and steal from non black kids. This was a time when going out to the mall was a scary proposition.
The building is still around. It was a Lucky’s and then albertson’s. A new natural food grocery store called farmer joe’s is going in by the summer of 2005. I have some images of the theatre in both day and night visions. I will put them up as soon as the site allows me to.
This was an incredible movie palace. I never saw it when it was running but friend of mine while in college snuck in to see the auditorium to take photographs of the interior. And much to our surprise, there wasn’t a whole lot inside. I managed to take part of the plaster frieze from inside and part of the terra cotta from the facade. I still have both pieces in my collection.

I saw the house of dark shadows there and remember the smell of pop corn and marijauna in the air.
