I’m pretty sure this is where I saw the sneak preview of JAWS a couple months before its Summer release….the entire theater stood up and applauded when the end credits appeared….what an evening!
I believe I saw the sneak preview of the “Towering Inferno” here…we all filled out reaction cards after the show! I still have the ticket stub, I’ll have to check and make sure it says “Mark Twain”! Beautiful theater.
RSM3853 question for you….do you have any idea which St Louis theater showed a film called “The Wild Westerners”? Was it Sunset Hills? Would have been around 64-65? I either saw it at Sunset or somewhere in Kirkwood as I recall…thanks!
dscheifler….thanks yeah they were all memorable films to me so the whole evening still hangs around there in memory…..that theater was. A big one for me….so weird to think of so many places from our youth are now just memories…
Hey thanks…yeah I think i saw all of those at Sunset Hills…..also “Westworld” and “Papillion”……popular theater back then….so weird that everything seems to be gone now…..
Yes and it’s funny because even my kids hate those multiplex things found in the typical malls and always look for a theater with bigger screen.
Wow so many memories growing up in St. Louis and going to all those theaters that are now gone. I guess the one at South County is gone too?
Think I saw Great Gatsby there…..
One thing I don’t get though…what made so many of these…Mark Twain, Crestwood, Sunset Hills….all go out of business? It’s not like people stopped going to the movies…?
JAlex….well that makes sense now. I remember seeing “What’s New Pussycat” at the same place I saw “Help” so that’s clear now. It seems I saw a lot of films over the years at Sunset. I remember seeing “Papillion” there as well, as I recall near Xmas…
Chuck…two things…
One, what did “day and date” mean back then? That the album came out the same day?
And…is there any way of finding out when a movie premiered at a given theater? Like what day “Help” came out here? Thx!
Saw The Beatles “Help” here in 1965, theater was filled with screaming girls!
I remember it being a very nice theater.
A lot of us from Lindbergh JR and SR High schools used to watch films here….
No, Kyle I am aware of the other two theaters you mention. But there was a theater kind of overlooking Crestwood Plaza in 1965, and that’s where I saw The Beatles film. It might not have been a GC though. Only way to figure thisk out would be if there was microfilm at the library with movie listings for Summer 65 I suppose…. Could it have been an AMC?
In fact, General Cinema DID own a theater at Crestwood Plaza long before it was an AMC. Maybe AMC built a new building in the place where the GC Theater was.
I saw The Beatles “Help” and “What’s New Pussycat” in 1965 there. I’m old lol

Did Butch Cassidy play here when first released?
Does anyone know where the film Cactus Flower played? I seem to think it was either here or maybe a cinema at South County mall…..thx
Does anyone have the dates “The Exorcist” played at this theater?
Thx
Tom

I use to go to the Osage in 1964-65, and it was definitely called the OSAGE then, not the Kirkwood Cinema….

Went there many times as a kid in the 50s and 60s….great times spent on the playground as the sun began to set and the screen flickered to life….

Girlfriend worked there when it first opened in the 60s…….saw Romeo & Juliet there.
Great theater….not so great girlfriend lol
Did “The Sting” “The Godfather” and Paper Moon" play here when the were first released? My fuzzy memory may be playing tricks in me….

JAlex, anything is possible as I went to all those theaters, but I remember it as the Crestwood.
Do you have any info on whether the Crestwood showed “What’s New Pussycat” ?
