I left Monterey Park in 1975, so merely stating some of the films I saw there over the years (as first-run films): I saw a matinee-only screening of “Wizard of Oz” in 1971. That night, they then showed a film called “Sudden Terror” with Mark Lester (Oliver) & Susan George. Other films included Disney flicks like “Million Dollar Duck”, “World’s Greatest Athlete”, “Robin Hood” (the Disney animated film), Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland”, “Lt. Robin Caruso, USN” (a 1973 re-issue), “The Strongest Man in the World”, “The Wild Country” (with Ron Howard), “Escape from the Planet of the Apes”, “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes”, and one time I returned to Alhambra, and saw “Rocky” (the original) there, in 1976. Didn’t see too many scary movies at the El Rey, but in 1973 I did see “Sssssssss” & “The Boy Who Cried Werewolf”, as a double-feature. I loved their “golden curtain” that rose & fell for each film.

In the mid 60s, my mom, dad, and I, and friends of theirs & their toddler (I was about five) went to see “Dr. Zhivago” there, and they sold out! I still recall an employee out front waving his hands in the air, gesturing they couldn’t allow more cars. We then went the following week, still packed, but we got in. A few years later we returned to see “Krakatoa, East of Java” (1969).

I recall a few visits as a kid in the early 70s when living in Monterey Park. My parents took me to a double feature of “Diamonds are Forever” and a bullfighting documentary narrated by Anthony Quinn called “Arruza”. Another time I went was a double feature of “Snoopy Come Home” with Disney’s “Now You See Him, Now You Don’t” (Kurt Russell) – must have been 1972. Two other screenings I didn’t attend – “The Other (1972), where they were offered free admission to any identical twins on the opening Wednesday. Another time, a gory horror film, "Mark of the Devil”; I think was rated R. It was a small quaint theatre, with not that huge a screen, but had a welcoming ambiance.
