In c1957 I was watching War and Peace here when there was a strange puffing sound. A staff member walked through the auditorium spraying with a disinfectant Flit gun! A unique cinematic experience.
I recall seeing East of Eden there. NB your map is wrong – again! Classic cinemas used to specialise in old or art films for a more discriminating (I guess) audience.
This was on my bus route home from school and I sometimes broke my journey to see a film. I recall Scott of the Antarctic, and The Prisoner with Alec Guinness.
I went to primary school just behind the cinema. It was also used by the Jewish community for special meetings at Yom Kippur. NB your map location actually shows the Regal at Childs Hill. Temple Fortune is north of Golders Green.
Many memories! Saturday morning kids' sessions: hundreds of us standing in silence to mark Tommy Handley’s death! Swearing blind I was 16 (actually 14) to see House of Wax, then being rather scared. Lusting after Brigitte Bardot in And Woman was Created. Sword fights in Scaramouche. This was my nearest cinema but we had 10 more within a short bus ride and used to go most weeks in the 1950s.
