One more point to make. I hired young 17/18 year old “ candy girl ” while I was Assistant Manager of the Odeon. I’m happy to say that that Candy Girl and I have been married for many years and have 2 sons!!! That’s SHOW BIZ I guess!!
I worked at the Skyway Drive In while in High School….1977 -1979. At the time it was Managed by Mrs Pat Berquist who was a great lady to work under. Believe it or not…she very seldom watched movies!!! It was her recommendation to Mr Nels Warner, manager of the Odeon Theatre in downtown Saskatoon, that I be considered for the position of assistant Manager upon completion of highschool in 1979. I got the job and continued in the theatre business until 1994.
The Skyway Drive-in was located immedaitely beside what is Idywyld Drive ( Circle Dr ). On the opposite side of the roadway is the Travelodge Hotel. “ Mrs B ” would always make us “ rampers ” walk around and turn down any speakers that were playing loudly after a car had left, as the hotel had on numerous occasions advised us that their guests were being disturbed by the noise from the drive in wafting over !!
This was a great place to work and many life long friends were made and we’re still in contact with some.
I worked at the Odeon Theatre from July 1979 until January 1986 as assistant manager and subsequesntly Manager when the current manager retired ( Nelson Warner ) who had been in the theatre business for over 50 years! When I started in 1979 the theatre was owned / operated by the Odeon Morton Theatre chain. They were a family owned operation and treated everyone very well. Eventually, they sold out to Canadian Odeon Theatres out of Toronto and then to Cineplex Odeon Corporation.
Cineplex Odeon started the ever popular $2.00 Tuesdays and every week we were able to sell that 606 seat theatre out!!!
I was offered a transfer to a triple screen theatre ( Coronet Conemas ) in Regina in 1986. The theatre was then managed by Ernie Cross. Mr Cross eventually was transfered over to the Pacific Cinemas and took over management when the Odeon was closed.
I just spent the Christmas Holidays in Saskatoon and the former site of this theatre is still vacant. There was a Holiday Inn Highrise just to the East of this site.
At the time of this theatre construction, I was theatre Manager of the Coronet Theatre in Regina and we were expanding at the same time. The very first Manager was ernie Cross who is now retired and spending his winters in Arizona. The 2nd Manager was Ron Collition who has since relocated to Manitoba.
I too was shocked to see a “ new ” theatre have such a short life. Unfortuantely, the Coronet in Regina has also met the same fate apparently. I left the business in 1994 after being in it since 1977 but was sent pictures of the Coronets demise.
