Oh wow!!!!!!! I’ve never been able to locate a photo of the interior of the Plaza prior to 2000 and I’ve searched the archives at the Atlanta History Center, Special Collections at Georgia State University, and this site many times and I’ve never seen one inside anywhere remotely close to this date. Where did you find this?? It’s truly a cinema treasure!

Currently operated by the City Church Eastside, the interior has had continued modification and is a far cry from its original layout. Some of the original lines can be recognized but the floors have been leveled off and raised up with a modern lobby and bathrooms added accessible at the end of a long hallway from the sidewalk. It has served as a venue (along with the Plaza Theatre and others) for the annual Atlanta Film Festival for the last couple years. Some photos of the interior are available on

The building on that block (that is where modern day 42 Georgia Ave SE) is but is the result of a search at 42 Georgia Ave SW) definitely looks like it was a movie theatre. It has the right height, no windows (although Carter cut new windows in it—if you look at Google Maps 3D it’s still the older view prior to the work they’ve done on the site). Whereas if it was exactly on the Georgia Ave and Crew corner, then that is where Turner Field/Georgia State Stadium currently sits.

In Feb. 1942, this theatre screened Citizen Kane after it had initially had its Atlanta premiere at the Fox, played at the Paramount and then a number of theatres in the area including the Euclid and Empire.

I don’t believe it was demolished. Can someone else check the map location? While certainly the marquee is gone, the building on that site looks like it used to be a movie theatre.
