I am so pleased this building has been preserved in all it’s art deco glory. Even as a child it was hugely impressive and for many years I feared it would be demolished. There can’t be many left like this.
In the 70’s and 80’s this building was a rollerskating rink (before it became a nightclub). It used to be open on Saturday’s and all I remember from the one occasion I went was how dark and dusty and old it was! Also the part that is now the Wetherspoon’s entrance was a Knee’s store at around the same time. Knee’s were presumably a locally owned chain of small department stores and also had branches in Truro and Penzance as I recall.
I moved to Camborne in 1973 when I was 5 and can never remember films being shown so must have closed around or before then. However I do have a vivid memory of them still advertising films for the Regal in Redruth for a while (quite possibly a few years) so I think film posters were still on display in the windows/foyer. The only poster I remember is The Golden Voyage of Sinbad which would have been about 1975. Can anyone confirm this or am I mad?!
