Building seems to continue to have work done to the upper floors. Roof is completely gone and insulating material has been attached to some areas so whatever this will be it will be at least four stories high. Thinking maybe conversion to apartments.
The Regent was mentioned in the caption under the picture. In Newsday Sun Feb 12, 2012 there is a picture of Main street from the 1930s showing the Regent marquis. One during the day and one at night. I’ll try to get them posted.
I have a promo album of Murray the K doing an Easter or holiday show from the Fox. Gene Pitney and a number of other great early rock stars are featured.
Back in 1972 when I graduated Canarsie HS our auditorium wasn’t big enough to hold the students and their parents and the graduation ceremony was held at the Kings. It was the only time I was ever in that theater but I remember thinking to myself that it was like the Radio City of Brooklyn.
I used to go to the Rugby back in 60s and 70s. Saw Hard Days Night and Help there and I remember my folks taking me to see numerous movies there when I was a kid. By the 70s it was showing XXX rated films there and I do remember seeing a few at that time.
I remember passing by the theater when it was the Plaza and the for a quite awhile the community was up in arms because it was showing XXX rated movies. Then it went back to first run for a short time before closing.
I wonder if this theater was related to George Tilyou’s Steeplechase Park which must have been right near it.
