I used to eat and drink at the Moongate. I knew Phil and his sister Mary who ran the place. I also employed Mary’s daughter at the Americana Theatre which I managed. She was under age but I was directed from upper management to hire her. I also ate at the Red Barn directly across the street where Parthenia made a bend.
Gotta comment. Back in the late 40’s my mother used to walk me over to Vose Street and Van Nuys Blvd. to catch the Red Car which then went down the center of VNB and turned left on Chandler and over the Cahuenga Pass and down Highland to Hollywood Blvd. to a theatre. The interesting thing about the Red Car was when we got to the end of the route the conductor pulled a box on a pipe out and took it to the rear of the car and started back. The Red Car yard was where the buses are at Sherman Way and VNB. The Red Car quit going out to Canoga Park in 1941.
I can’t find from previous posts but my first 3-D movie was at the Fox.
I first went into that Thrifty’s in 1957 with girl friends. Our favorite order was a Cherry Coke that the waitress would call in as ‘One Virgin’ then after a short while we would change the drink to a regular coke just to hear her call it in as ‘rape it’. She had such a great sense of humor. She was even on to us for turning a water glass upside down with the cash register receipt and pull the receipt out. After the first time she grabbed the glass and water went all over she would put the bus tray up to the counter and slide the glass into it.
And wasn’t it Carl’s drive in across the street?
The guy that ran Heads'n'Highs was in a wheel chair.
How about Kings Western Wear with Levi’s for $3.25 each…
Boy, that was quick! No on the schools – I’m way older. When we lived at 15048 Sherman Way between Sepulveda and Kester I went to Hayvenhurst Elementary 1945 to 1948. We moved to Canoga Park that year and I went to Winnetka Elementary ‘til 1952 and then to Sutter Junior high to 1955 and off to Canoga Park High School to 1958. Then Pierce 'Junior’ college and then off to manage various motion picture theatres. As I recall the Fox theatre had some kind of a platform or raised area in the back possibly for handicapped.
Seems the question about A&W has been answered. It was in the 7300 block east side of Van Nuys Blvd. between Sherman Way and Valerio St. My friend smashed his Corvair on a post in the back while watching a girl on roller skates! To Marilyn. I went to the Rainbow Roller rink at 14318 Calvert between Sylmar Ave and Tyrone Ave from 1956 until Stan and Roy closed it and it reopened as an Ice skating rink called Iceland as I recall. Stan went on to build what was called the Cinnamon Cinder and Roy opened the Northridge Skateland at 18140 Parthenia in Northridge.
I started as an usher at the Americana in 1964 when it opened with Michael Shirar as manager. The phone recording was, “you have reached the Americana Theatre, the Valley’s newest and most unique motion picture show case.” Yes, Morrie Gilruth was the projectionist and didn’t work matinees as posted above because he would come in right after to work the second shift as it paid overtime! I also dated his daughter Sandy. I went to assistant manager under Bob Cartier and Del Lesser and then manager in 1965 before going to the Embassy Theatre at 331 Western Ave. in L.A. I became friends with Phil Ahn, owner of the Moongate next door and hired his sister’s daughter as cashier. On one ocassion we “film tagged” with the Panorama Theatre and ole Morrie sure knew what he was doing. Then there was the bowling alley and the Red Barn across the street – those were the days. I wouldn’t go by there now…
Correction on opening year. The drive-in was opened summer of 1966 with Bill Cummings and myself as co-managers. I rented an apartment at Isla Vista at the end of, that time, Ward Memorial Highway, now 217 fwy. I had previously managed the Americana, the Embassy and the Alley Cat before training and opening the twin theatre. These were all Robert L. Lippert theatres but the Santa Barbara may have been co-owned with Pacific Drive-ins. Coming in from Hollister was a flea market on Kellogg, a name unfamiliar in the San Fernando Valley where I lived. Shame – none of the theatres I worked at are in existence today………
Where do I start? Ok, while going to the Rainbow Roller Rink on Calvert two blocks east of Van Nuys Blvd. If anyone has any info on the rink, please let me know. I started cruising Van Nuys Blvd. in my 1941 Plymouth in 1956. I stopped cruising in my 1963 Silver lowered Lincoln in 1969 when the police clamped down on cruising. I also parked my motorcycle at June Ellen’s in 1967. I basically hung out at Oscar’s at Van Nuys Blvd. and Saticoy from 1962 until closing (then bought paint as Sinclairs!) I worked at GM in 1963 and Banes Brakes and the Crossbow was across the street and down from Blythe St., the Peyton Place of the Valley. I met my first wife at Oscar’s in 1967. I remember most of what’s listed above as Andy Andrews, Dick Landy, etc. I managed the Americana Theatre in 1965 and made nice with the Satan’s Slaves at the Panorama Bowl. Curious as to who Larry the duck is as I also went to CPHS but from 1955 to 1958 and also worked at Mike’s Pizza – in 1958. (Skipping around…) I bought Levi’s at King’s Western Wear for $3.25/pair – wow, am I old. That’s it for now although many more thoughts could be written.
