The Rex Theatre opened in 1917 and closed in 1929 for conversion to sound pictures. It did not reopen until 1934 when it’s name became the State Theatre. In 1970, the State Theatre was renamed the Capri. It was partially destroyed by fire in 1971 and although it could have been restored, it was left a ruin.

As I recall, the movie “Red Sky At Morning” was scheduled to play or was playing at the Capri when it burned. I also remember the rush to secure a place to play the movies scheduled and that they played at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. Movies such as “The Andromeda Strain” played to large audiances at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. As for the very short life for the name “Capri” theatre, The Rex Theatre opened in 1917 and closed in 1929 for conversion to sound pictures.
