Great memories here. I was stationed on Oahu from late 1983 to early 1987 and saw some great movies here with my then newlywed wife – among them Terms of Endearment and The Falcon and the Snowman. I moved back to Oahu as a civilian from 2002-2005 and was sad to see it gone, like so many of the old classic theaters from those days.
Great memories of when I was stationed on Oahu from late 1983 to early 1987. This place was very “old school” cool to me, and I remember shopping for music and books at Froggies, across the street, almost every time we saw a film here. So sad that it, like so many other Honolulu theaters, is gone.
I lived in Hawaii Kai from July 2002 – July 2005 with my wife and our then-young son and we saw plenty of movies here, but the one that stands out the most was the The Two Towers (the 2nd Lord of the Rings film), because our son was SO into it and my mother was visiting from the mainland.
Bummer; another closed old-school theater. I was stationed on Oahu from late 1983-1987 and saw movies mostly in other theaters (like Waikiki 1,2 & 3, and the Kapiolani Theater) but did see Black Widow here in early 1987, shortly before leaving the islands. Then I moved back to Honolulu as a civilian from 2002-2005 and saw a few here with my wife and our young son. The one that stands out the most was seeing The Piano with my wife in the summer or fall of 2002, my first time back to the Varsity since 1987 and my wife’s first time ever. So sad to see these old places go.
I was stationed at MCAS Cherry Point in Havelock from late 1981 to late 1983 and saw quite a few movies here with buddies or dates. Among those that stand out in my memory most are Fast Times At Ridgemont High, An Officer And A Gentleman, and The Verdict. Great memories of good times with good friends, many of whom I’m still in touch with in 2018.
Great memories of my wife and I taking our then-young son to the special midnight grand openings of the 2nd and 3rd Lord of the Rings movies here, back in late 2002 and late 2003. Of course, we saw many other movies here before leaving Hawaii in 2005, but those two are special because our son was at that “movies are pure magic” stage of childhood.
I remember seeing Stop Making Sense as well as Nightmare on Elm Street here when I lived on Oahu circa 1984-1987. And eating at Chicken Alice, after or before. Great memories!
I was stationed at MCAS Kaneohe Bay from late 1983-early 1987, working as an air traffic controller, and have many fond memories of the Kailua Drive-In. Great nostalgia.
In the summer of 1980, after high school graduation, I moved up to Baltimore to spend a year with my dad before going into the Marine Corps, and I worked at Roy Rogers in the Golden Ring Mall. It’s now 2018 and I still have clear memories of the theater there. Among the movies I saw there: Motel Hell (hey, I was 18), Nine to Five, and The Howling.
