Worked at Wabash one summer.It was not a big money maker.It was a hangout for the neighborhood kids and they could cause some problems.This was in 1948.
It was pretty run down then and there was not much effort to keep it up
The group that owned the eastland theatres including the Wabash sold out to other people and bought several drive inns called Alladan drive inns. This was in the 50s

There were also two other theatres in the vicinity that are not listed in the archives.
One was called the Riviera and was located on the south side of adams about two blocks past La Brea. It was built before the variety.It later changed it’s name to Fremont.
On or near tge corner of Adams and Crenshaw was a large more upscale theatre called Bards. I understand it was built by the Bards brothers. They had ushers in uniform.(north side of street}
Anyone familiar with La Cienega elementary school on Adams between Orange and Sycamore?

I grew up a few blocks from the theatre and remember it being built. It replaced a market called blue jay I think. The building on the corner which is a club was a bank called Citizens National Trust and Savings Association. We banked there and attended the variety on Sat. Matinee. There was a candy store next door, On Sat you paid 10 cents and got a candy bar or popcorn or an ice cream cone in adittion to the double feature cartoon and serial.

Rongee commented about Meralta Theatre on Apr 29, 2010 at 4:26 pm

I attended the meralta theatre when I was a child and was facinated by this site and the old pictures.
There was a theatre across the street from the meralta called Joy that was owned by the same group.
Apparently after Jack Berman filed the lawsuit the parties got together and were partners in all the theatres in east LA.
The only names that come to mind are Meralta,Joy,Wabash,National andI think there was one called Brooklin.
Really enjoyed the pictures.
