The young Australian Architect Rex Smith was engaged by the Bristol office of William Henry Watkins to design three cinemas for their client William Mumford, Managing Director of the Sound & Movement Cinemas Ltd circuit of Plymouth in 1935. All three cinemas were built within a year which must have kept Rex Smith on his toes during their construction. They were the Regal Redruth opening 2nd December 1935, Plaza Truro opening February 1936 and Kings Camborne April 1936. The first two Regal and Plaza were similar internally even the restaurants had the same tablecloths. Externally though at the Regal Smith let his modernist flair go and he designed a great Art Deco exterior, whereas at the Plaza Truro it was more restrained set by the buildings either side. However, he made up for it internally.
