February 6th 1931 showing the Empire facade blocked out by advertising panels. We see the queues either side awaiting entry. Adjoining left side, renown department store “Stagg & Mantle” has now been renamed “Staggs” this was to be their last reconstruction and make over during 1922 this prestigious store originally opened in 1834 and for the next hundred years grew and enlarged its premises until closure in 1936. On the left is the Queens hotel opening 1899 front with Grill Room, eventually to become the Monseigneur News Theatre.
