Empire Theatre Leicester Square

This photograph shows the queue in Leicester Street, at the rear of the Empire for the all talking singing film “Broadway Melody” which drew the largest crowed ever to the Empire during a single week in May 1929 with 82,849 admissions, running for nine weeks with a total of a record 500,000!!! The canopy shows the rear exit from the Empire still used in 1989 as an exit from the Mecca dance hall, that replaced the former stalls area of the MGM Empire. Note also the rear part of the Staggs store which still occupied this corner onto Leicester Square. Showing a close up of their Art Deco designed display windows, the top sections were finished with acid etched glass of a Sunburst featuring a stag rearing up on its hind legs.
